Bridgend Boat Co Ltd wins £2 Million Sea Cadet Contract

Bridgend Boat Co Ltd has seen off the opposition to win the prestigious contract to build a new 24 metre ship, the TS Jack Petchey, for The Marine Society and Sea Cadets.

The Jack Petchey will be a sister ship to TS John Jerwood, which will considerably increase the capacity of the charity to offer young people, from the age of 12, a six day voyage at sea.

The new 24-metre power vessel will accommodate some 16,000 young people during an anticipated 25 year lifespan. They will learn skills such as engineering, electronic communication and chart systems, cook/steward, the need to be vigilant and keep watch. They will also learn the value of living in a tidy and disciplined environment, and the need to employ sound social and communication skills when working in a team.

The Jack Petchey will comply with MCA and Lloyd’s regulations. Bridgend will take 2 years to build her at their Mount Batten yard, starting with making the plug, then producing the mould. From this they can then make the moulding which will be the foundation to the fitted out and finished product.

Bridgend can take ships and yachts up to 100 feet comfortably in the hangar with more capacity outside on their yard. More importantly the hangar is heated and humidity controlled to ensure only the best quality is produced.

Once the TS Jack Petchey is moulded, the hull mould will be available for other projects. Contact us for more information.

The company is already well-known for their Plymouth Nelson 44, Swordsman 37 and 40, and more recently the 82 and 85 footers for an international boat building company.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be building the Jack Petchey," says Peter Humphrey, Director of Bridgend Boat Co Ltd. "The company is very fortunate to have the full scope of skills in-house to produce what we anticipate to be a fantastic training vessel for the Sea Cadets."
